Chaos is a Mirror

I can remember clearly many days where it felt like motion sickness was coming strong over me from all the confusion and chaos that seemed to naturally engulf my surrounding world.

I would be driving into the office, after getting up late and stubbing my toe, getting toothpaste all over me, spilling coffee in the car and my shirt, hearing horns honking, seeing middle fingers flying all the way through the heat of rush hour.

I’ll get to the office, walk straight pass the boss, not even saying hello, and sit down with an attitude like everyone was in my world and they were intruding.

I’ve had many days like that, and to think of it I’m not surprised that some bosses were a jerk to me at times because of my attitude. Everything was in chaos at certain moments, and I had no patience for belittling from others.

What I was experiencing was completely an expression of who I was at the time. I bet many of you can recall terrible moments in your life, where you hated certain people but come to find out you are somehow looking in the mirror.

When I look back, that’s exactly what it was. My environment was a mirror of myself.

There was a sleeping Chief within me that wanted to come alive, but thought that it took everyone else to change first before that happened.

Kind of like how many people are sitting around and waiting for Jesus to return and save of us all; all the while we’re supposed to just stay asleep in our misery until He does. Perhaps, the return of God has much to do with the people actually coming alive and making the return worthy, just as much as the Chief within all of us must come alive as well making our environment worthy.

You can’t change your world; the world changes itself. All you can do is influence its change by changing yourself as well, and thus you will see that mirrored reflection change.

If you ever want a quick update on how you are doing internally as a leader of your path, just look at the world as a mirror and that should give you a clue.

You attract that which you ARE.

As a man thinks, so is he!! Who couldn’t relate to what you shared. YES – too often what we are fighting against is just a reflection of what’s in us. And we can’t change anyone but ourselves. The amazing thing is – once we change ourselves – “magically” the people who annoyed us seem totally different :-)

You are so right! Thanks for that reminder… They do seem different… Shift in perspectives can change enemies to friends, and vice versa…

Rob, I have thought about this recently and the things I attract in my life, both good and bad. I make many assumptions about others based on how I view the world. What agitates or makes me upset about someone else is almost always something that I dislike or see in myself. Funny how that works.

Love your phrase “making the return worthy” – never saw it from that light.

Absolutely, we can take a look around and get a quick vitals check on how we’re living just by witnessing what we like and don’t like about our world.

Oh and yes, making the return worthy to me, is like rolling out the red carpet. How are we intentionally staging that red carpet for the Greatness to come? Amazing to think about…

I agree and disagree with elements of what you have shared.
I completely agree that too many people are simply waiting around miserably in hopes that Jesus will return within their lifetime and end this chapter of history. I also agree that this does no one any good — and really it is harming them more than others because they are being like a servant who was only given one talent of money . . . .

I disagree with you that humanity, or any specific individual, will ever get to a place that makes Jesus returning now worthy. Instead, Jesus returning has more to do with God’s timing and His perspective and not about us. As I have studied and grown, I see God waiting because there is a glimmer of hope that more will be saved. It is only when that glimmer of hope finally goes out (as it did in the days of Noah) when Jesus will return and save the handful of people who are left alive.

I agree that while we are waiting though, we must not be sitting idly by and counting down the days/hours/minutes. Instead, like you suggest, we must do things to actively come alive and be the people who God created us to be. While we can impact our spheres of influence, coming alive has more to do with how we will give glory to God and less about how we make ourselves worthy in His eyes.

Great post, and happy to be challenged. It helps me clarify the thoughts in my head. :)
