Erring on the Side of Nothing

I was having a conversation with someone about business in general and how real leadership can take a backseat depending on the culture that’s currently rooted.

Apparently culture is a huge common denominator for any organization and if the culture is not open to change the innovators have a hard time getting through.

Sometimes ‘erring on the side of caution’ really ends up being about ‘erring on the side of nothing’ because there’s no movement; no motivation to get anywhere. Everything just is because that’s the way it’s always been.

There has to be direction, and the culture needs to come alive in their own light through the individual’s motivations if you really want to see the chiefs glistening in that light.

The environment becomes more conducive to innovative change and genuine leadership, when the whole wants to get somewhere.

So give them somewhere to get to that excites them!

When you do that, you bring that whole to life; you change the culture; and thus you change the organization.

When you can’t see the immediate solution to breaking through this barrier, it’s usually best to step out of the box and align your sites on where everything is actually heading. Where is the market going, and how is your organization going to help this market get there?

Once you understand this and have done your research, you can then make a compelling presentation of change, or even possible re-invention with a proposal to move this team towards that breakthrough, inviting everyone to ignite the chief within them, take ownership, and start heading to where everything is going.

Show them how much potential they have standing right there within their own strengths, and how much greatness and opportunity can come of this. Give them the keys, the tools, and this new direction in a way that compels them enough to get excited about doing something that’s meaningful.

When your team is erring on the side of nothing, they are either feeling very secure at where they are, or they are scared of their own greatness. Many times, it’s both.

Break that security, bring their fears to light, and help them see the vulnerability of doing nothing.

But most of all help them see and experience the possibilities of taking action and moving forward with purpose.

No greatness ever came of nothing, and we need to be able to remind people of that truth by simply living it, and inviting others to do the same.

Very powerful – I especially love what you said here: “When your team is erring on the side of nothing, they are either feeling
very secure at where they are, or
they are scared of their own
greatness. Many times, it’s both.” Very, very true – and not just of corporate culture – but of individuals as well.

Amen, Ann… Thanks! This applies all around the board.

Rob, I listened to your post with the mindset of my family. I’ve pondered and pondered about the best way and what rituals I want to make a part of our family and be able to lead my wife and daughter to higher places across the board. In areas of service to others and in personal growth and learning. My challenge is communicating that over to them. I like your statement ”
So give them somewhere to get to that excites them!” That will be my call to action this summer!

Also – just wanted to let you know that I like being able to listen to your posts as an option. It’s a nice touch.

Thanks Michael! Well, I’ll keep recording them then :-)

But absolutely, family can have the same analogy; and communicating what you see is not that easy; at least for me it isn’t… A friend of mind once said, “Rob, I wish I could see what you see for day”… I laughed of course, because he would probably see how crazy I really am, but when I think back on it, it’s exactly what I want to happen sometimes…

It’s one thing to talk about my vision, but for them to really get the vision and see it to with their own eyes, that to me is an automatic sale!

This reminds me as well to always be in the thinking of the creative and illustrative way to get stories across…

But then again, perhaps just living it is the most convincing way there is.

    What do you think?

I think you’re right, Rob! Live a life that is so contagious that others want a part of it. This Sunday I meet with one of the church children’s leaders to see how I can best serve them – but best of all, I get to take little CK along with me so she can help. I want her to see service modeled by mom and dad, you know?

  • http://www.180coach.com/ Rob Clinton

Absolutely, love how you’re intentionally being that model of service for CK… Not to mention for other parents as well!

    Wonderfully inspiring Rob.
Again, the topic of leadership really excites me! Pushing boundaries, paving paths. Yes indeed!!

Thanks Claudia; this topic is exciting to me as well… Let’s make the path!

Great post and reminder. Leadership has to be personally-individual and not generic. The only way to inspire others to take ownership is to be able to relinquish management yourself. Too many manager-leaders don’t want to do this, and because of it, their team suffers, they wonder why there is no ownership, and they struggle with semi-engaged workers.

What I got out of this post is that it takes action over time to change a culture, and not an empty inspirational speech.
