Erring on the Side of Nothing
I was having a conversation with someone about business in general and how real leadership can take a backseat depending on the culture that’s currently rooted.
Apparently culture is a huge common denominator for any organization and if the culture is not open to change the innovators have a hard time getting through.
Sometimes ‘erring on the side of caution’ really ends up being about ‘erring on the side of nothing’ because there’s no movement; no motivation to get anywhere. Everything just is because that’s the way it’s always been.
There has to be direction, and the culture needs to come alive in their own light through the individual’s motivations if you really want to see the chiefs glistening in that light.
The environment becomes more conducive to innovative change and genuine leadership, when the whole wants to get somewhere.
So give them somewhere to get to that excites them!
When you do that, you bring that whole to life; you change the culture; and thus you change the organization.
When you can’t see the immediate solution to breaking through this barrier, it’s usually best to step out of the box and align your sites on where everything is actually heading. Where is the market going, and how is your organization going to help this market get there?
Once you understand this and have done your research, you can then make a compelling presentation of change, or even possible re-invention with a proposal to move this team towards that breakthrough, inviting everyone to ignite the chief within them, take ownership, and start heading to where everything is going.
Show them how much potential they have standing right there within their own strengths, and how much greatness and opportunity can come of this. Give them the keys, the tools, and this new direction in a way that compels them enough to get excited about doing something that’s meaningful.
When your team is erring on the side of nothing, they are either feeling very secure at where they are, or they are scared of their own greatness. Many times, it’s both.
Break that security, bring their fears to light, and help them see the vulnerability of doing nothing.
But most of all help them see and experience the possibilities of taking action and moving forward with purpose.
No greatness ever came of nothing, and we need to be able to remind people of that truth by simply living it, and inviting others to do the same.
