I Got a Plan but I’m Bored out of My Mind

Sitting here and bored out of my mind will be the resulting feeling if I don’t get up and put feet to where I need to go. That resulting feeling plus many months compiled onto the same habit of inaction may cause me to resent myself and get depressed because I will feel so lost and wonder why nothing is happening in my life; wondering why nobody seems to call me back; wondering why I can only find time to send résumés to two people; wondering why I lack the energy and confidence to get anything done.

Too many people literally give their selves excuse after excuse in order to keep from doing anything at all. They seem to work very hard at keeping away from work. I had a friend that once complained, “These people work harder trying to figure a way out of work, than they do just trying to work at all!

That statement can be taken in two ways. For one, we should always be trying to figure out how to make things more efficient and more productive using less man-hours as possible. It’s what frees us to be creative and driving at new initiatives that make the world go ‘round. It’s what frees us, period!

On the other hand, it can be taken in such a way, where people are just not putting in effort towards the objective at hand. If they’re not investing effort towards what needs to happen, and are applying more effort towards doing nothing, then I would say that person is not inspired by what needs to happen.

Inspiration is so important!

If you are missing the inspiration, then you are not going to get anywhere with the energy and confidence you need. You need to get inspired first, and then come back to talk about moving forward. That’s when the excitement jump starts you, and lights a fire underneath your feet.

Tony Robbins once said, “People are not lazy, they simply have impotent goals; or goals that do not inspire them.”

Not being inspired is the biggest killer of action. Get inspired, produce your plan of action and launch! You’ll hear many people blame this on an assumed condition called analysis paralysis, and I can understand this in my own detailed personality type. But what I find is that the only thing someone is analyzing when they are using that excuse is whether or not they are “inspired enough” to see their visions come to life.

Analytical heroes bring a great strength to our world and many businesses, but should pay very close attention to not keep that very strength from allowing them to move forward.

Make your blueprints, build your boat just enough to where it can float, and get out there and sail! Doing this, and you can leverage all the precision and expertise you need to adjust your sails and build on to your deck along the way.

Too often people want an ocean liner built around their idea, rather than a raft, mast, sale, and rudder. While ocean liners are inspiring, they aren’t build overnight, or without experience. They also aren’t captained by people who have never experienced water travel before.

Instead, build a raft, set up a mast, set your sails, and sail out into the water of the unknown — because when you’re on a raft, you are bound to learn a lot more than if you try to pilot a cruise liner. On a raft, you are experiencing life first hand, and first hand experience always leaves a more lasting impression than second, third, or fourth hand experience.

As always, thanks for sharing Rob!

    Excellent point, Cam! Love
the raft versus ocean liner analogy. So true how much harder the lessons can be
if we try to kick off our course at the helm of an ocean liner, when we could
have taken the natural course of action, and just began with what we had; in
many cases a simple raft. At least we could get somewhere, and by the time we
would have built an ocean liner, we would be pros.

    Rob,

Yes, inspiration is so important.  I have been inspired, but I can see how “analysis paralysis” can keep us from moving forward.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Marianne! It’s a dream killer for sure. Inspiration is the greatest cure…

I agree Rob.  For me, inaction is the kiss of death so to speak – it seems to breed more inaction!  Inspiration is definitely key here – once you are inspired, things seem to take on a life of their own!  And the other key, for me personally, is fear. You called it analysis paralysis – but for me it’s that fear of taking that next step, or that first one!  But once you do – it all begins to flow.  My son, Matthew, bought me a beautiful crystal sail boat with this inscription on it which I keep on my desk:  The will of God will not lead you where the grace of God cannot keep you.  That reminds me to just do it!

Ann, that’s an incredible inscription! Thank you for that!  ”The will of God will not lead you where the grace of God cannot keep you.” And you’re absolutely right… What I’m speaking of is “fear”, just from another context… It keeps us from moving forward if we allow it. But through inspiration, we come alive.

Yikes Rob, inaction can lead to wondering what the heck happened to our lives! Love the picture of making our blueprints, building your boat just enough, and then moving! Fix those sails along the way if we need to.
    Thanks for posting!

Yikes!  Makes me wonder how inspiring my goals must be!  I do know that the best thing I can do sometimes when I’m in a rut is a physical movement, action.  I think for me many times the lack of motivation can be fear-based, or mentally imagining a task to be worse than it ever really is.  I’ve always liked Brian Tracy’s “Eat The Frog First” motto.  Just get it DONE and the rest is smooth sailing.

Thanks Jen! Most of planning is done in the movement of things anyway, so the seas are wide open to just sail…

Thnx for that reminder; I love that book “Eat That Frog” – I always recommend it when working with my clients. And I agree Michael, just get it done!

Inspiration, the fuel of champions.  When I am lacking that inspiration and drive i have to go back to my goals and see where I had planned to be and that inspiration moves me forward. Thanks for the post.  Blessings, @missioncoach:twitter

@missioncoach I love how you bring us to the phrase “fuel of champions”. That’s exactly what it is. It gives us the drive that we need to move forward. It’s difficult to get in someone’s way that’s inspired.

Cindy Hirch came to me because of something I wrote that drew her attention. She had come from a world of many struggles, pains and fears; even the threat of cancer. I never forget how we started working together; there was so much anticipation about what the future really held but nothing seemed to make sense at the time. She was stuck in the mud, the fog was closed in around her, and she couldn’t see a thing.
