Knocking Down Walls Like a Champion

Well, it was August of 2007 when I put my notice in with Fidelity to go work for a health care recruiting firm. I thought I needed to get out of the rut I was in and try something totally different, plus my work environment was getting very negative; so health care it was.

So here I am placing people in health care jobs; for about 4 months, if that. Yeah turns out to be a failed attempt for me, but thank goodness in December a buddy of mine at the time, JP, ran into a new position back in the Financial industry at a different company called Goldleaf.

He sent me the information, I got on all their horns, aggressively seeking the hiring manager of implementations and scored!

My approach was ‘KEY’ with this company.

I had sent a note in to the head of HR, then I called an SVP who then directed the hiring VP to call me. As a result, the balls were all rolling, as the HR, SVP, and Hiring VP had a reason to talk about me behind closed doors and get all excited about this crazy job candidate who is trying to knock down their walls. Yeah, I heard all about their excitement about me later on because of my approach.

The bottom line to remember here is that I knew what I wanted, and was going to give it my best shot possible to get connected with the right people, demonstrate my confidence and shine like I never shined before, and then make it happen. I had my sights aligned and fixed.

This concept goes much farther than job searching. That’s just the application of what this is really all about. This is about leadership and taking charge of what something means to you, getting out there and then making it happen.

Why so many teams, plans, organizations, and individual efforts go by the way side is because the entity the drifting. It’s drifting because the people in it are drifting. There’s nothing to inspire and motivate them.

I was extremely motivated to land that job, and so drifting was not even part of the equation. I got on all horns and made sure everyone that needed to know I was motivated knew I was motivated, and as a result it became very contagious; they became motivated too.

They knew that I had something great to offer, and that wherever I was going it was probably going to benefit their company.

There was no room for mediocrity where I was heading; I had a mission, a focus, and because of my aggressive efforts I saw it through; success!

How bad do you want something that you’re willing to knock down walls to get it?

How inspiring, Rob, and very relevant for me right now. That’s a really key question I think we all need to be asking ourselves continually – How badly do I want this? Am I willing to knock down some walls to get there?

Rob, I can ensure you that if I needed a job – I’d knock down some walls!!! I told my wife if I ever lost my job, that I wouldn’t return home until I found one! Well, this is good motivation, Rob. I am amazed at the numerous folks I have freely given Dan Miller’s 48 Days process to and they never touched it. Just the simple 3 steps introduction letter, resume, and followup letter (EASY!) distinguishes you from 99% of the other applicants. Clearly shows a lack of motivation!

Yes, absolutely Ann… Go out there, and rock this world! You have something amazing to give everyone…

It sure does! If you don’t go do what it takes, then I’d question if you really wanted it. You have to want it, to make it through the grind.

    Rob,
Michael and I have both been thinking about this concept a lot recently. It takes leadership, guts, determination and vision.

I have been realizing more and more how many followers there are out there, even among people who are actively pursuing purpose and change. The leadership avenue is wide open, it just takes courage to step into it and the skills of a good leader can be learned just like anything else.

I always thought leaders were anyone other than me. Now I know that isn’t true.

You want something bad enough you will knock down any wall to get there. That passion and motivation IS contagious like you said and people will be caught up in your wake.

loved this post! Blessings to you as you continue to knock down walls!

Thanks for the encouragement there Claudia… Absolutely, to me the old paradigm saw leadership completely than how I see it now. I’ve had many conversations with people about this, as the term “leadership” started to become a debate. As Earl Nightingale said, “We each can lead the field”… I believe that completely, through each of our own strengths and calling we’re called to lead our own fields, as well as knock down or climb over any walls that stand in the way.

Honestly, I feel too often like I am drifting more than I am swimming. Part of the reason is that swimming is tiring, and part of it is that I often don’t see success from my efforts at trying to move in a specific direction.

Part of the other reason is that I am not in an “emergency”. I have a steady job that isn’t likely to go anywhere, and the environment is better than most places. Because there is the big cushion, and no fire under me to move, there isn’t a strong motivation to press heavily forward.

Thanks for sharing some of your job transition strategies, and the power behind having a singular focus.
